Delirium (Delirium #1)

Delirium (Delirium #1) by Lauren Oliver

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

4.5 INTENSE, ROMANTIC STARS!!

“Love, the deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don’t.”

Wow. Ok where to start with this review! I absolutely love dystopian I just find its so nice to really get out of reality sometimes and dystopian books always does the trick for me. They are always so intense and gritty, I’m always on the edge of my seat with shaky hands. This book definitely was a fantastic dystopian and I love that there was more romance in this one then some of the other dystopian books I have read recently. My heart was always stopping and I had so many butterflies taking flight in my tummy!

Ok so what’s Delirium about?
Delirium is about this crazy world that thinks love is a disease (I know mad). You grow up thinking love will kill you and they call this ‘disease’ Amor deliria nervosa. So when you turn 18 you have to go through an operation to have a certain bit of your brain taken out which then means you are ‘cured’ but this turns you into a bit of a robot you don’t love and you don’t really care you just go through day to day being the same and never really feeling. Anyway before this you have to go through a load of assessments so they can match you with a boy/girl that you will marry and have as many children that has been chosen for you. Now there is people out there in the wilds that the cured call invalids they don’t believe in this disease and live in a different border. They haven’t been cured which you know if they have by a scar they have just behind their left ear. Now I don’t want to say much more as I think you should go into this not knowing much as the surprises are awesome.

“We must be constantly on our guard against the disease; The health of our nation, our people, our families, and our minds depends on constant vigilance.”

Lena the heroine is brilliant I really enjoyed being in her head. She didn’t mind about getting cured as she believed all the nonsense about love being an illness. This all changes when she meets Alex. At first shes kind of naïve while strong but as the story goes on she comes out of her shell and ends up being brave and stands up for herself.

My Lena.

Alex was a great hero. He was so caring and understanding towards Lena. I liked that he wasn’t the usual bad boy you read, yes he was cocky but from the beginning he was sweet. As the story goes on you realise how brave he is and what he will do to save Lena, he is selfless and strong. He really fell for Lena and at times he broke my heart.

“You have to understand. Lena. I’m trusting you. Do you see that?” He’s staring at me so intently I can feel his eyes like a touch. “I didn’t mean to – I didn’t want to lie to you.”

“Lena. I like you, okay? That’s it. That’s all. I like you.”

My Alex.

We also have another really strong character in this book and that’s Lena’s best friend Hana. I found her to be a really strong, kickass character and also a good friend to Lena although at times they battled with keeping their friendship going strong, but was always there for one another. I really liked Hana and I hope we see more of her in the second book.

“Then she reaches down and squeezes my hand, two quick pumps and then two long ones. It’s our old sign, a habit we developed in the second grade when one of us was scared or upset, a way of saying. I’m here, don’t worry.”

My Hana.

I just loved this book so much. At times I couldn’t sit still with everything going on. I fell in love with the writing and how it flowed so nicely and Oh boy that ending what an epic cliffy. Straight on to the second one now!!!

“It will kill me, it will kill me, it will kill me. And I don’t care.”
